The Chicago-based nonprofit United States Artists has named the 50 recipients of its annual 2024 USA Fellows, which comes with an unrestricted cash prize of $50,000 per winner.
The fellows are selected across 10 different disciplines, including visual arts, writing, film, craft, and traditional arts. The winners come from 22 different states as well as Puerto Rico and range in age from the 20s to their 80s.
“With this year’s cohort of USA Fellows, we are thrilled to support a group of artists who, in their diverse approaches and contexts, offer invaluable modes of healing, expression, and collaboration,” USA president and CEO Judilee Reed said in a statement. “Together, they invite us to join them in imagining endless possibilities for ourselves and our communities.”

A Garden, Uneven: EJ Hill at Oxy Arts
This year, four artists and two collectives won in the visual arts category. They are New York–based Trisha Baga, San Juan–based Sofía Gallisá Muriente, Los Angeles–based EJ Hill, and Nashville-based María Magdalena Campos-Pons, as well as New Red Order, which comprises Indigenous artists Adam Khalil, Jackson Polys, and Zack Khalil, and Fronterizx Collective, which consists of Gabriela Muñoz and M. Jenea Sanchez.
Campos-Pons was recently the subject of a mid-career survey at the Brooklyn Museum and was also consulting curator for the 2023 Tennessee Triennial for Contemporary Art. New Red Order recently staged an impressive outdoor installation in Queens through a commission from Creative Time.

Gallisá Muriente won the 2023 Latinx Artist Fellowship and her work was a highlight of the 2022 exhibition “no existe un mundo poshuracán: Puerto Rican Art in the Wake of Hurricane Maria” at the Whitney Museum. Hill’s 2022 long-term installation is ending its run at MASS MoCA next month, and he was one of the breakout stars of the 2018 edition of Made in L.A.
The Fronterizx Collective is currently the subject of a solo show at the Phoenix Art Museum, for winning the insitution’s 2023 Arlene and Morton Scult Artist Award. Last year, Baga was included in the major thematic exhibition “The Irreplaceable Human – Conditions of Creativity in the Age of AI” at the Louisiana Museum of Modern Art in Denmark.
In a statement, USA board chair Ed Henry said, “Common threads across this year’s cohort—including collaborative and research-based practices—remind us that the impact of our awardees’ contributions reverberates far beyond any singular individual or small group, but rather throughout communities and regions for decades to come.”
Other notable winners include Garrett Bradley, the director behind the acclaimed documentary Time, whose work regularly appears in museum exhibitions; Cristóbal Martinez, a member of the artist duo Postcommodity; Mimi Ọnụọha, who created a 2022 commission for the Whitney Museum’s Artport in 2022; ceramicist Linda Nguyen Lopez in craft; and Haida artist Sgwaayaans TJ Young, who won in the Traditional Arts category.
